Frequently asked questions

What should I expect during my first class?

During your first class at GUMA, you’ll be introduced to the basics of either Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Striking or Judo, depending on your choice. Our instructors will guide you through warm-ups, basic techniques, and light drills. You won’t need any previous experience—just a willingness to learn!

Do I need to be physically fit to start BJJ or Judo?

No, you don’t have to be in peak physical condition to join. Our classes are designed to help you improve your fitness level gradually. Teens and adults of all fitness levels are welcome, and we’ll help you build strength, endurance, and flexibility over time.

What if I have no martial arts experience?

No problem at all! GUMA’s classes are designed for all skill levels. Whether you’re completely new to martial arts or have some experience, our instructors will ensure that you learn the fundamentals in a supportive environment.

I’m interested in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, but I’m not sure which one to start with. How do I choose?

Both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Judo are excellent martial arts that offer unique benefits, and the choice largely depends on your goals.

If you’re interested in ground techniques like submissions, joint locks, and controlling your opponent on the ground, BJJ may be the better fit. BJJ focuses on grappling once the fight hits the ground and is known for its effectiveness in self-defense scenarios where opponents may be larger and stronger.

If you prefer stand-up techniques and throws, Judo might be the right choice. Judo emphasizes balance, leverage, and throws to bring an opponent down to the ground. It’s great for building agility, improving footwork, and learning effective ways to defend against standing attacks.

Consider combining both! Many students choose to train in both BJJ and Judo as they complement each other. Judo helps with strong takedowns, while BJJ enhances ground control and submissions.

Ultimately, it’s about what excites you the most. We offer free trial classes for both, so you can try each out and decide which feels right for you. Feel free to start with one and add the other later if you're looking for a well-rounded skill set.

How do I sign up for a free trial class?
